Halloween isn’t Just Costumes and Candy

Discover the roots of this cultural holiday rich in tradition

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!! 🙂

  1. Where and when did the tradition of Halloween start?

  2. What was the most important night for the Kelts? Why?

  3. What happened on Halloween night 2000 years ago? What did the Druids use to do?

  4. How did Halloween make its way to the United States? And how did our fore mothers and their families practice it?

“My First Vote” by our Pittsboro Student Adella

I think is very important to vote. You don’t need to be a political person. I believe that freedom is the most important right to use, and the election of government is the best way to use it. I will vote for the first time and I’m very happy and excited to express my opinion in these elections. This is an opportunity that we must not lose in any way. People in other countries would like to have the freedoms, rights and wonderful opportunities we enjoy and we must defend.

Enhancing Instruction with Visuals

Dear Teachers:

The following video is part of the Ventures Professional Development Series. It illustrates the best practices for using visuals in the classroom.

The key points covered are:

·   Before using visuals, create interest in the topic
·   Use visuals to activate prior knowledge
·   Use visuals to build vocabulary and grammar
·   Use visuals to prompt pair work

Would you rather…?

Use would rather + verb to talk about preferences, or what you want to do.

For example:

A: Would you rather watch a movie or a soccer match?

B: I would rather watch a movie.

A: Would you rather stay home or go out?

B: I think they‘d rather go out.

Students in Siler City Center worked with a partner and wrote the following questions and answers to express preference:

1. A: Would you rather eat shrimp or steak?

     B: I’d rather eat shrimp.

2. A: Would you rather drive a car or a motorcycle?

      B: I’d rather drive a car.

3. A: Would you rather play soccer or baseball?

      B: I’d rather play soccer.

4. A: Would you rather read or sleep?

     B: I’d rather read.

5. A: Would you rather go dancing or shopping?

     B: I’d rather go dancing.

Special thanks to Carolyn for taking down notes of the sentences students made in class.

Practice Typing Online

Used with permission from cc511 via 2.0 Generic (CC BY-NC-ND 2.0)

My students asked me to find an online website to practice typing and I found this cool one: DANCE MAT TYPING

It’s been designed for kids, but I had SO MUCH fun typing without looking at the keyboard! There are 4 levels you can master. Enjoy! 🙂
