Veteran’s Day at The Siler City Center

SILER CITY – Veterans Day will be observed on Thursday, Nov. 3, at the Central Carolina Community College Siler City Center.

This event will begin at 10 a.m. and will offer classes conducted by veterans who will share their military experiences.

The presenters will be Chatham County resident Dr. J. George Chall and CCCC Instructor Kyle Talbott. Chall was a World War II Army medic in the Battle of the Bulge, and upon returning from Europe, attended Columbia University on the G.I. Bill. Talbott is a Post-911 Navy veteran and teaches English as a Second Language at Siler City and also Spanish/College prep classes for Veterans Upward Bound. He is a native of Florida and a graduate of N.C. State University.

The event will include a ceremonial activity with patriotic music by vocalist Victoria Chall, accompanied by guitarist Danny Gotham, with participants in flag-arrayed formation.

This year’s theme is “Celebrating American Heroes.” The observance is intended to offer gratitude for deserving men and women who have served and continue to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces and for the year-round sacrifices of service members and their families.

With participation, career exploration, and military appreciation from students of the College and Career Readiness department, highlights will include tributes to the ends of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War — and a holiday-themed talent showcase.

The event is free and open to the public.

For more information, people can contact coordinator Della Newkirk at dnewk746@cccc.edu or by calling 919-545-8668.

Finding out new meanings #1: the verb to tell

“Tell” and “Say” can be easily confused. Here’s a very interesting post with usage on these two verbs. Enjoy!

Teach Taught Taught

B1 I want this to be the first post of a series that I’ll call “finding out new   meanings”: we’ll look at some common words and learn meanings that students do not immediately relate to these terms.

Today I want to focus on the verb ‘to tell’. In its most common usage, to tell simply means ‘to say something to someone’*. However, today I want to explore other meanings of the verb ‘to tell’.

TELL MEANING ‘TO SEE /UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE’

Have a look at these sentences:

  1. Mary and Lucy look so much alike that I can’t tell who is who.
  2. I’m really bad with languages, I can’t tell the difference between Spanish and Italian.

In both the above examples, ‘tell’ is used to express the inability to see / get the difference between two people / things.

TELL MEANING ‘TO UNDERSTAND or BE SURE’
  1. I can always tell when my boyfriend…

This event was coordinated by the CCCC Diversity Committee, in association with the Student Government Association.  We will like to give special thanks to our students Franklin Gomez and Carlos Sanchez for their generous assistance.

Paul Cuadros: Retrieved from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Media and Journalism

Paul Cuadros is an award-winning investigative reporter and author whose work has appeared in The New York Times, The Huffington Post, Time magazine, Salon.com, The Chicago Reporter, and other national and local publications. He joined the school in 2007.

For the past 20 years, Cuadros has focused his reporting on issues of race and poverty in America. In 1999, he won a fellowship with the Alicia Patterson Foundation, sponsored by New York Newsday and considered one of the most prestigious fellowships in journalism, to report on emerging Latino communities in rural poultry-processing towns in the South. The culmination of his reporting was his book, “A Home on the Field: How One Championship Team Inspires Hope for the Revival of Small Town America,” which tells the story of Siler City, N.C., as it copes and struggles with Latino immigration through the lives of a predominantly Latino high school soccer team.
