Proud of Having an ESL Instructor with Passion and Dedication

Miss Virginia, our ESL instructor at Siler City Center, was awarded a gigantic apple piñata for her teaching passion and her dedication to the college for so many years. Students and staff at Siler City are looking forward to getting all the goodies from it. 🙂

WAY TO GO VIRGINIA!!

My Student’s First E-mail

My student Jesus R. opened his Gmail account and sent me an e-mail for the first time in his life. It says:

“Hello Julia,
How you doing today? I don’t have time to come to class on Monday.”

CONGRATULATIONS, JESUS!! Looking for many more to come 🙂

Conditional Sentences

Miguel Olvera wrote the following sentences with 1st and 2nd conditional. GREAT JOB!! 🙂

If I get hurt, I’ll be in the hospital.

If I go to college, I’ll get a better job.

If I save a lot of money, I’ll buy a new house.

If there were no wars in this planet, it would be a peaceful place.

S.N.A.C.K & CORA Food Pantry in Chatham County

S.N.A.C.K Program: Summer Nutritional Assistance for Chatham County

In  2009 CORA began the SNACK! program to help fill the gap in childhood nutrition in the county over the summer. Almost 4000 school children (49%) in Chatham County receive subsidized meals at school with no reliable substitute during the summer breaks for this critical nutrition. The SNACK! program provides food for 10 meals and healthy snacks per week for the 10 weeks of summer for up to 1000 children.

CORA Food Pantry: Chatham OutReach Alliance , INC

CORA was founded in 1989 as the Chatham OutReach Alliance, Inc. (CORA) with the mission of providing emergency food to those in need throughout Chatham County. Families in need may visit the pantry up to six times in a 12-month period.  Families receive food in sufficient quantities for 21 nutritious meals for all family members. Unlike many food pantries, CORA allows their clients to “shop” and select their own food in pre-determined quantities based on family size. Volunteers assist clients with their selections.

My First Day of Class

Today is my first day of class. I am very excited to take my first ESL class at Siler City Center. I’m originally from small town in Peru and I came to the US 10 years ago. I love Siler City because it is quiet like my hometown in Peru.

My goal for this year is to learn how to write and pronounce English well. In order to achieve my goal, I have to follow three basic steps. First, I need to come to class every day. Second, I have to practice reading and writing at home. Finally, I have to participate in class and use my English at work. Maybe I will be able to speak it fluently in a few months.

Are you new in class, too?

Where are you from?

Why are you taking ESL classes?

What are your goals for this semester?

You can reply to me by making a comment in this post 🙂

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Aurora

Caution: Record-Breaking Heat Wave

We need to get ready for this serious heat wave in Chatham County.

Tony Tucker, director of emergency management for Chatham County reminds residents to:

  • check car air conditioning systems

  • check home air conditioning

  • drink extra fluids that are not icy cold (some may need drinks like Gatorade).

  • make sure you have a plan in place for friends or relatives who live in uncooled homes, are disabled or have serious health conditions.”

  • wear loose, light-colored clothing and a protective hat.

If you don’t have air conditioning, you should visit friends or spend time at a shopping center, senior center, library or other cooled facilities. Electric fans and open windows will help, but may not be enough to prevent heat-related illnesses in a severe heat wave.

“The Chatham County Council on Aging has a limited supply of electric fans for those age 60 and older, but please contact us as soon as possible,” said Angel Dennison, executive director. Call 919-542-4512 if interested.

Dennison added, “Our senior centers in Siler City and Pittsboro are open to seniors and others residents Monday through Friday until 5 pm to take a break from the heat. We always have some activities going on or you can just relax, read a book or visit.”

Lower income residents currently having trouble paying utility bills to cool homes may qualify for one-time emergency assistance through the Department of Social Services. “The requirements are very specific and the funds are not on-going, but they may help a few residents restore power for air conditioning,” said Sandy Coletta, director of Chatham County Social Services. Call 919-542-2759 to see if you qualify.

The inside of automobiles will be especially dangerous for children and pets, even for a few minutes. Studies show that in just 10 minutes, a car sitting in 100-degree heat will reach 113 degrees and a dark car will be even hotter. Leaving windows car windows open a bit will help, but will not prevent extreme heat buildup.

Signs of heat stroke may include a high fever, lost of consciousness, dizziness, nausea, confusion, rapid strong pulse and headache. The skin may be red and hot but not sweating.

Signs of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, muscle cramps, weakness, headache, nausea, paleness, tiredness and dizziness.

If you suspect heat exhaustion or heat stroke, call 911 immediately and get the person out of the sun. Until help arrives, cool them as fast as you can by putting them in a cool shower or spraying them with a garden hose.
